Hello- I’m a noob using the default Kubrick theme and all included default images are .jpg’s even though they could easily be .gif’s instead. Am I limited to only jpg’s in WordPress, or can I substitue my own gif images, (smaller file size), for the default jpg images? In other words, are all web format images suitable for WordPress?
    Thank you!
    DB!

  • You can use any viable web-visible image format far as I know. I use a varying selection of gif, jpg and png….

vkaryl- Thank you! I suspected as much, but needed confirmation before making any major changes.

After originally uploading a jpeg, then writing another post all attempts to upload jpegs results in not allowed this file format.

Just a thought: go into Options | Miscellaneous and confirm that jpeg is an allowed file extension. WP comes by default set to allow files with both jpg and jpeg extensions, but check anyway.

Some people here dislike the default theme, but anyway… The JPG files that are the background of the default theme are fairly small file-size. You wouldn’t see much performance increase by reducing them, but go for it if you like. PNG is emerging as a preferable file-format over GIF. Look into PNG’s.

Ha! This got me to thinking of other web page issues aroung <img src=”somepic.JPG”>… Sometimes uppercase creates a problem. Evidently it does here as well. I used lowercase “jpg” Voila! No mas problema!
