Image download failed because of POST error 500

  • I can’t download photos:
    – Unsplash search works perfectly
    – I click on one of the photos (“Click to upload”)
    – I see “Downloading” then “Resizing”
    – then I get a red exclamqtion mark icon (failed?)
    – my Chrome browser console says: “(unknown) POST https://www.sockle.io/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php 500 (Internal Server Error)” and I see in the JS stack: unsplash.js:324 (unsplash.uploadImage(el, id, image, description);)
    – I checked with an FTP client: there is a (temp?) JPG file created in the folder wp-content/uploads/instant-images
    – there is no image in my Media library
