• Hello.

Have you ever heard of image captions basically deleting themselves from images in the WordPress Media Library?

I’m working on a staging site that’s heavy in plant photos. The photos on each page go into a gallery on that page to be popped up in a light box. I’m using Lightbox with PhotoSwipe, Version 3.4.2, for the first time, today. Previously, I had used Easy Fancybox, but I wanted the black effect for this.

Lightbox with PhotoSwipe needs the captions in order to show the info on the images. All was working fine, when suddenly, I noticed some but not all of the image captions had disappeared from the Lightbox.

I then went to check my Media Library, and sure enough, the captions were gone there, too.

I manually reinstalled all the captions. They had vanished from exactly 10 images, the most recent 10 I had uploaded. The game repeated itself 8 times. Seven times, I reinstalled the missing captions in the Media Library, checked back and forth and saw that they were working fine. A minute later, they were all gone again.

So far, the captions have REMAINED on the images where pics were installed in a POST, even though the captions are no longer on the ten images in the Media Library, which is odd. However, the captions have disappeared (as would be expected) from the popup lightbox. I don’t think a lightbox plugin would delete image captions from the Media Library.

I just backed up my site and am downloading it in case there is vandalism underway. So, I can’t work on it again until I solve this riddle of the captions disappearing from images in the Media Library on WP 6.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

First off, please review WordPress 6.0 Master List and attempt troubleshooting steps outlined therein.

If that does not resolve the issue, then please Create a ticket in our bug tracker:

Hi. Thanks for the bug-tracker link. However, I made a mistake. It isn’t 6.0, that’s the update that it wants me to install. So, I have the previous one.

Can you tell me, is it impossible for captions to just disappear out of the Media Library?

I just found another one, from a couple of weeks ago, stripped of its caption.

I have over 800 photos of plants.  I can’t keep doing this work over again.

I wouldn’t say “imposible”! For example, theme/plugin conflict can cause all sorts of problems.

However, I made a mistake. It isn’t 6.0, that’s the update that it wants me to install.

Looking at your site, it seems your site is on WordPress 6.0

    Probably it got auto updated?

Anyhow, I definitely recommending reviewing WordPress 6.0 Master List and attempting troubleshooting steps outlined therein.

Hi. There was an update request top left in the sidebar, asking me to update to 6.0, but, as you noticed before I did, it must have auto-updated when I wasn’t looking. Anyway, the captions on 10 pictures are still being deleted. It happened for the 12th time today, I restored them all again, took XML of media for May, and am backing up again. I think it will be worth trying a different web host, maybe the deletions will stop.

Thanks for the bug list, I will have a look.
