Image Captions (figcaption tags) causes unusual formatting

If Advanced Posts queries for a post that begins with an image that has a caption below it, the caption is included as part of the excerpt and formatting is far skinnier than the normal text

Is it possible for the excerpt to ignore <figcaption> contents or, at the least, maintain consistent formatting?
