  • To the best of my knowledge, WordPress does not resize original images on upload. The original version is always uploaded, but additional sizes are automatically generated based on your media settings. Your active theme and plugins may also define additional sizes to be generated.

Where are you finding this 1600px image? Can you provide an example URL where such an image can be found so I can dig into this for you?

I may made a misunderstanding description. i mean all images i uploaded are limited to 1600px. and i can not resolve it. the site is totally new and in the process of building, no url is avaliable right now. really sorry.

i mean all images i uploaded are limited to 1600px.

Unfortunately, I still don’t understand what you mean.

What’s making you come to this conclusion? Can you provide a screenshot that shows uploaded images being limited to 1600px?

As I mentioned earlier, WordPress will always upload your original size (or give you an error that it’s too large and it can’t upload). But the exact size that’s displayed on your site depends on the context the image is being used:

    1) When you insert an image into the post editor, you have the option to choose the dimension/resolution you want to use. As I mentioned earlier, WordPress automatically generates some thumbnail sizes as defined in your media settings, but themes and plugins can also define additional sizes to be generated.

    2) In automatic post listings on your site, our theme (or a 3rd-party page builder plugin) will define various thumbnail sizes to be used in different contexts.

    3) Plugins that create their own content pages may also define the sizes of images for their archival listings.

In all cases, the original image at the original dimension should be uploaded and remain intact.

hi, really thanks for you detailed explanation. when i upload an image to the wordpress, you can see the original dimension is 1920x1080px, but it will show 1600px always (for image width exceeding 1600px). I do not know where to change this parameter.

This happens in a brand new site that is in the processing of building and not public right now. I used anothre site’s URL to make illustration.

Hi! I’m having the same issue, any solutions?

Did anyone find a resolution, this just started happening on a new site for me.

I am also having this issue, as soon as I upload the image and use it on the site as an image, the intrinsic size is a max of 1600px

Only fix I have found is to convert the image that is greater than 1600px wide to webp before uploading to wordpress.

    That’s interesting….

I have a clone of my site running on the same web host – exact same install, same plugins and same WP version and it doesn’t convert the files. I’m at a total loss to understand this behaviour.

I removed all the plugins and still had the same behaviour.

    I’ll try the webp Avenue.
