I’m Having a Hell of a Time Editing this Theme

So I’m trying to remove nodes from the theme and they keep coming back when I add a widget or a menu.

I’d like to make the home page really clean, without all the colored lines and the white block in the middle of the page, but they just won’t go away.

I want to establish a menu for my reviews.

Any ideas?
