I’m rather confused about the purpose of “Add video” in the post/page editor (and equally about “Add audio”).

I’ve just upgraded to WordPress 2.5.1. The new image uploader and gallery functionality is all awesome and is working fine for me. It’s all great stuff, and I haven’t seemed to have experienced the problems other people have reported here.

However, also next to “Add media:” after “Add an Image” are icons for “Add Video” and “Add Audio” but all these seem to do is add hyperlinks into the post/page. Given that there is already an icon for inserting/editing a link in a post/page I was rather confused by this; it seemed like “Add Video” and “Add Audio” were supposed to somehow embed the video or the audio in the post, instead of just a hyperlink. So now I don’t know if something isn’t working properly with my installation, or whether I’ve just got the wrong idea about what these are supposed to do (in which case, from a usability perspective I suspect I won’t be the only one).

Could someone please enlighten me as to what these are supposed to do?

You’ve just got the wrong idea about what they’re supposed to do.

If you want to embed audio and video on a web page, you need some sort of third party tool to do that. WordPress does not include one.

The Add Video and Add Audio sections are pluggable. They’re there for plugins to add functionality to. The Image stuff is included, because it’s pretty easy. The audio and video stuff needs flash players or something similar if you want to embed things, and everybody wants that to be done in different ways. So WordPress doesn’t attempt to do it, you need to get a plugin for it.

Thanks, Otto42. That’s cleared that up!

Still, it’s interesting that they’re there: I am assuming that they are placeholders for future functionality that will try and do something a little fancier. (I mean, if they aren’t placeholders for something yet to come then I would suggest that they be removed as they are bound to confuse people — at the moment “Add Video”, “Add Audio” and “Add Media” just all do exactly the same thing!)

So the “Add Video” button is useless then. Why is it taking up real estate on my screen? If it’s a placeholder for future functionality how about you make it available to developers with a switch and turn it off for us users?
