• So I’ve been finding a ton of resources on why it’s important to make a child theme and how to do it. The problem is that even the guides aimed at beginners are a bit beyond my skill level.

    I’ve heavily edited the Twenty Ten theme (after hours and hours of reading the forums) for a friend. Her site is myvibrantliving.com

    HOW do I FTP to that site so that I can copy the current edit and make it into its own file?? I have FileZilla, but I don’t know what to do with it. :\

    I’m sure I’ll have more questions later, but for now, this is all I need to figure out.

    I’m using Firefox on Win7 if that’s worth mentioning.

    Thanks for any help.

    …I should mention that if there’s a way to do the whole ‘FTP’ thing from a browser, that might be better suited to my abilities. FileZilla looks confusing. ??

    If the 2010 theme is already heavily modified, I’d suggest that you turn it into a new, custom theme.

    I thought that’s what making child theme was, essentially? I’m just trying to preserve it as a separate theme so that when I update WordPress (and subsequently twenty ten) I don’t lose my alterations.

    Is what your proposing something I can do without resorting to FTP stuff? If so, what would I do? ??

    No. Child themes depend on the parent. Your new theme will be standalone. If that’s not what you want, then review Child_Themes. And both approaches would require FTP.

    I don’t know how to distinguish if what I have is a new theme or a Child Theme. I think I’d assume it’s the former, I guess.

    Ah well. I’m not that hip to the lingo, I’m afraid. :}

    I’m sorry but if you’re working on a site and modifying a theme, you really should know what you are doing and take steps to familiarise yourself with the terminology before you start. The WordPress Codex includes everything you need to get started.

    No need to be sorry. Thanks for the info.

    Still working my way through the help files. I’ve been at it for hours, literally.. just posted here to see if someone could help me with the FTP stuff as I seem to have hit a roadblock that I can’t resolve on my own (as of now) :3

    We can only help with very general FTP issues – not specifics.

    I’ll look elsewhere then, thanks.
