• Hi… I’m new here and just started a blog. I downloaded a theme but it says in “theme editor” that the pages are not writable – so I cannot seem to edit anything. It’s the sidebar I want to add to with my own things. It seems all the theme … even WP’es defaults I see the same “not writable so you cannot edit” message.

How do I customize my sidebar?

    Thanks for any help!! ??

  • Edit the sidebar.php page of the theme offline, then upload it.

What program will open a .php file? I keep getting an error message trying to open it.

Notepad, which I believe everyone has, or Dreamweaver.

Notepad, notepad2, notepad++ (free, can find the sites using google), phpedit…. just don’t use word or wordpad…. Oh, probably Open Office will too….

Thanks.. you guys are very helpful. I was able to open it up in Notepad. But now what? I have no idea what code to put in. For example, if I want a weather pixie, do I just copy & paste the HTML that is provided me? Otherwise I’m just not sure because I have no idea on inputting PHP code.

I read it. It might as well be written in Chinese LOL I didn’t understand it at all. I’m beginning to think WordPress might not be the software for me. Do you know if there’s a more beginner-friendly product out there I could try? Thanks for all the information. I do appreciate it. ??

That’s a good resource for anyone who hasn’t programmed in PHP, XHTML, or CSS before. It’s a WordPress plugin, and is a drag-and-drop type sidebar. No coding involved.

You may be right. WP is not for everyone, that’s completely true. If you’re not prepared to invest time in learning the basics of customising, the basics of HTML, CSS and even PHP, then WP is not for you. But then again, neither are almost all the other major blogging platforms.

Out of the box, WP works nicely. But, as I’ve already said, if you want some customisation, you’re gonna have to learn the basics. This will take time but it’s worth it, if you’re serious about blogging. The other option is to pay someone to customise it for you.

Alternatively, you could sign up with wordpress.com, which allows for a certain amount of customization without having to do anything BUT drag n drop. Sometimes that’s the best place to start. And it’s free.
