    Trying to write permalinks, I get the mesaage (WP 1.5):

    ‘if your .htaccess was writable we could do this automatically, but it isna€?t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.’

    I have searched for .htaccess and do not find it. Where should it be and do I just drop ina blank .htaccess file?

    It should be in your main WP directory (=where you installed WP, whether the root or /blog… etc.) and if you don’t have one, YES, you can just drop there an empty file named .htaccess and chmod writable, e.g. 666.
    Be aware, in some FTP clients you cannot see the .htaccess file unless to change the options to show invisible files. Most of them have this option.
