• I’m trying to set up a site for my church and it looks ok in FF but in IE8, the sidebar is pushed way down. I’m an old man and have learned a bit but know nothing about php coding. Anyone willing to take a look?

    thanks in advance

  • I have IE8 and your site looks fine, except when I change to compatibility view and then I see the issue you’re talking about.

As a fix, you can change the width of your sidebar to 295px. You don’t need to touch php code for this – change this in #sidebar in your theme’s style.css file (you can access this via Appearance – Editor in your WordPress admin area).

pheno..thanks so much for the prompt response. I tried 295 and that didn’t work but it told me where to look. I played with it for a while and 285 worked but the navigation bar was still messed up. It was below the nav bg so it was almost invisible unless you knew it was there.

I was still puzzled and reread your post and wondered about the ‘compatability view’ statement. I searched the IE menu bar and found the switch. Turned it off and yep, site views just as it should.

Now, my question (and mods can delete this if I’m straying to far from the forum topic) Does IE come with ‘compatibility view’ turned on as default?

    Glad that works ??

I hardly use IE except to test sites I build, so I’m not sure if compatability view is on by default. It’s off in my version, but I may have switched it off right from the start (I can’t remember!).

Thanks again. I found out on the microsoft site that the feature is only available in IE8 and IE9 (and probably future). It is designed to view older sites and shouldn’t be the default. Like you, I never use IE and so had no idea about that feature. Thank you again for your help. I’ve tried multiple themes and spent way more time than I should have trying to fix this. You have made my day.
