Yikes. It might well be a very stupid way to get a cool template and design for a budding site. But this doesn’t make it any less identity theft. The bandwidth issue is one thing — I’m not quite sure, they might just as well be doing no more than linking to you. But what’s without any doubt a huge no-no is the fact that they are a) redistributing your copyrighted material without your permission and b) committing plagiarism by pretending to be the authors of the material. What do Cedant say to that? They need to tell off the owners and be prepared to pull the plug after due warning; from their Acceptable Use Policy, which is here:
Unacceptable Content
All services provided by Cedant Web Hosting may be used for lawful purposes only. Transmission, storage, or presentation of any information, data or material in violation of any United States Federal, State or City law is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to: copyrighted material, material we judge to be threatening or obscene, or material protected by trade secret and other statute.
If you don’t have any progress to report soon, I’m going to write a polite email to [email protected]
myself. If several of us do this (no invective, please!), they might just wake up.
