• I run a small business, and use WordPress and I’m massive fan. I know this will get shouted down by the acolytes, but I’d love a WordPress for Business.

It would be fantastic if I could input the standard business info: Our Name, Our contact details, our introduction, our testimonials, our mission statement, etc, and then be confident that if I try different features or themes, that data will be preserved and will be recognised by the feature or theme and work properly without tweaking.

Iknow, Iknow, I know. WordPress was started as a blogging platform. I get that. It’s just that to say it’s for blogging, is to deny the fantastic and far greater success it’s had for business over the majority of its lifetime.

These are features that would be implemented by a theme; there are many such in the repository.

Hi Steve. Thanks for the quick reply. I’m not sure I follow you. Is there a way I can input and store the sort of info I mentioned, and be sure it will be picked up, recognised and handled correctly.

It would depend on whether it were supported by your theme. I’ve done it on a couple of custom themes to ensure that the phone number is THE phone number every place its used. But this should not be a core WP feature.

Hi Steve. Again, I’m not sure I follow, but if you’re saying there’s a difference between the needs of a blogger and the needs of a business, then I completely agree – I just think it’s currently still very blog-centric.

Do you disagree that it would be helpful if WordPress natively (or with a plug-in perhaps) could fill out a form of common business details:-

    Name
    Address
    Email
    Telephone
    Required Company Information
    Privacy and Cookies Policy
    Mission Statement
    Testimonials
    Team Biographies

… And have confidence that most well-written themes would handle that data like they should?

    I disagree.

If you feel strongly about it, write a plugin or theme and see if you can rally folks around the idea.

I think WP Core should be the smallest possible engine to drive this (running out of metaphor here…) thing forward. Plugins and themes add the decorations and distinctions.

    Again, Steve, I’m not sure I follow – to rewind a bit…

You’ve said these are features that would be implemented by a theme – I’m saying wouldn’t it be great if users could have certainty that certain basic company info would be implemented by different themes in the way the theme designers intend.

Do you see the difference there?

I just don’t get your point about telephone numbers – but if you don’t want to clarify, I’m not certain it’s pertinent either.

WP Core is not something I’m familiar with, but you’ll note I’ve not called for it to be bloated in any way.

I don’t think it’s that massively controversial to suggest WordPress make some nod to their business users.

COuld there be some sort of compliance system – say “WP4B Compliance” – as a business user you fill out the WP4B company information form, and then you go looking for athemes that are tagged “WP4B Compliant”, perhaps.

Thanks for suggesting I write a plug-in. I know nothing about such things. Will you help me?

Not everyone wants the same website as you. Every theme offers different features. WordPress by itself just stores and serves the content. The theme determines what and how it will be displayed on screen.

WordPress itself has nothing to do with your name or address, that is content. I do not think you completely understand what WordPress is or how it works…

wouldn’t it be great if users could have certainty that certain basic company info would be implemented by different themes in the way the theme designers intend.”

No it wouldn’t – and I am speaking as a small business owner too. A vast number of users aren’t businesses and would never make use of this feature. More importantly there are many businesses that have different needs from yours. If WP includes support for the info you want into the WP core then surely they should do so for all the other types of businesses (and non-businesses) that have different needs…. at which point the core is no longer a core but a bloated Jabba the hut of software.

Wordpress core code should include only those things necessary for site operation – anything else, such as user specific image or information requirements should be handled by themes.
