Icons showing in foreign characters?

I just installed this plugin, and I’m getting the same thing – it’s not Japanese, it appears to be ASCII or some other thing indicating that the fonts are not being loaded.

Further research:
On a Mac running 10.10.5:
NO social icons show up on Firefox 47.0.1 (no boxes, no nothing)
On Safari, Chrome they are blank colored boxes

On a Mac running 10.9.5:

Firefox 47.0 – Colored rectangles with rectangular boxes containing ASCII characters.
Safari 9.1.1 – Colored solid rectangles

So, any help from authors?
