Use the developer tools in Chrome or Firebug in Firefox. You can see what CSS is being applied to any element in the page with either of those tools.

I have the same issues. yes the CSS are being applied. I have created my own and it works flawlessly. Just go to fontello.com generate the icons you want and custom code it. I have shortcodes and widgets.
