Icon pushing down menu text

When I add an icon to a page (regular menu link) it works perfectly. When I add sub-pages for a drop-down menu, the icon pushes down the text so it almost looks like the icon is on a another line than the text of the button in the menu. Plus, the icon is now different. It looks like a little box now.
Any suggestions?
