Icon alignment always off

I’ve been using Menu Social Icons with many sites over the last couple of years. With every site, I’ve noticed that the icons created always seem to be “off” in the menu. It’s hard to explain exactly, but it seems that the icons are always a little too low as compared to the other menu items and they generally tend to make the menu bar a little taller than it originally was. I’ve usually just tweaked the CSS to massage it, but I’ve grown tired of this now. Since it happens on all themes I use and I have tested disabling all other plugins, I’m fairly confident it is this plugin.
Here are a couple of example sites where you can see the icons are off, especially since the menu bar has a special effect on rollover.
