iCal feed for posts/categories

  • OK, I have a somewhat special set-up: I’m using posts as news and/or events listings (depending on category) with a custom field (ACF plugin) for the event dates. I would like to add way to subscribe to a post or to all posts of a certain category via iCal, so that posts would appear in a user’s favorite calendar application.

    I’ve searched the internet and found no solution that fit my needs; the iCal plugins I found were either to import iCal into WordPress (I want the opposite) or were outdated and abandoned, or were embedded in some events calendar plugin which I don’t really want/need. Is there anything existing that would work for what I’m trying to do? Alternatively I’d also be willing to pay someone to develop a plugin for my specific application.

    I’d be grateful for any help.

  • This may seem sort of weird but maybe you might take a second non-public WordPress instance (maybe a subdomain of your host) and have one of those calendar plugins that does generate iCal and RSS or ESS provide your iCal feed and then let it also export its content via a RSS feed to your main site.

    It’s a Win Win for all as you and anyone who needs it gets a Calendar that works well for automation and organization… your clients/visitors get an iCal feed, and your site visitors see the events as posts.

    This is one of the calendars I’ve worked with and sometimes you might need to get more creative and splice two calendars together – one feeding the other – then feeding the feed readers, other calendars, and even aggregators.

    Thanks but that sounds a little like me having to bend backwards to serve the software rather than the software serving me. Thinking outside the box is good but that’s so far outside that I don’t even see the box anymore. ??
    Seriously, it would drastically complicate the workflow and maintenance if I had to maintain two separate instances of WP, and editors will have to log in to a separate installation just to enter calendar dates; in that case I could have used standard events calendar plugins in the first place and it would be easier.

    No, I’d rather pay a developer to create a custom solution that fits my requirements.
