you need to edit the theme style sheet.

Actually, you can alter the theme file itself and remove this. This page in the codex tells you what each theme tag does, just remove the ones from your index theme file and the single page theme file that you don’t want displayed.

Ehm, I think you need to change the index.php (and archives.php, single.php) instead of the style.css.
