After I updated Yoast SEO today, I’ve been stuck with a huge message banner in my dashboard telling me why I should try to update my PHP version. Well, I don’t have control over that, and it doesn’t appear my host will do it — and changing hosts is not feasible at this time. I want to be able to dismiss the message from my WP dashboard. There is no “X” to close the message.

  • But that’s the point of this warning:

“This notice will be big, ugly, and non-dismissible.”

    See https://yoast.com/whipping-your-hosting-into-shape/

You really should get your host to upgrade the PHP version.

Thank you for the link; that’s good information. However, it’s very poor public relations to make me unable to dismiss the notice once I’ve read it. I mean, I don’t care if you make the notice appear every time I log in to the administrative page, but at least let me acknowledge it and get it out of the way. I just want to be able to dismiss the notice, not ignore it. I think it’s wrong of Yoast’s developers to make the administrators’ dashboard fit the Yoast agenda more so than the work the administrator is trying to accomplish.

Okay, I get it! I need to try to get my host to upgrade to PHP 5.6, at minimum, but it will take time and there are other concerns to address. Why shouldn’t I be able to acknowledge that I’ve read the prompt/warning today and suppress it for today? What give Yoast’s developers the right to be obnoxious?

I guess I will have to roll back my version of Yoast and/or deactivate the Yoast plugin.

If you’re not at PHP 5.6 yet, you’ve got a lot more to worry about than Yoast SEO. PHP versions prior to 5.6 are not getting security updates anymore, so your site is at risk of getting hacked. At least with PHP 5.6 you’ll get security updates until 31 December 2018 (refer to https://php.net/supported-versions.php).

It’s not just Yoast’s agenda. It’s an agenda that’s valid for the entire World Wide Web. If you’re knowingly running a site on outdated, insecure software, it affects everyone if it gets hacked and your site becomes a spambot or malware distribution point. Get a new host if yours is too lame to upgrade to at least PHP 5.6. There are plenty of good hosting companies that keep PHP up to date.

So, after preparing an e-mail to explain to my web host why they should upgrade, I found no method of sending the e-mail and wound up using their on-line support chat. And the support person showed me that I could update PHP, even to 7.1, using the control panel.

While I still don’t care for the sledgehammer approach Yoast used, it was effective.
