I want to change the website address

  • Hi, about a month ago I bought WordPress hosting for my domain Done4Usmartmedia.com. Now, I changed my mind on the business name, I bought a new domain name and would like to use my current WordPress site but I need to change my website address to my new domain which is MobileConnection.ca .

    I need a simple step by step solution to accomplish that.

    OR, would it be better to just forget about the hosting I already bought and get a fresh new registration?

  • You may ask the hosting provider to migrate the contents in your old domain name to your new domain name..

    Thanks for your answer. I have been looking around the forums to find a way to contact the right people at WordPress but no luck so far.
    Do you know of an email address I can use for that purpose?

    Self hosted wordpress has no email address for support you can post your question here and one of regular wordpress users will help you with the problem

    You will need change your urls in Settings>>>General before you move files and folders to new domain name.

    What if you changed the WordPress URL under General Settings, and now you’re getting a 404? Hit the back button to change it back to its original URL, but that didn’t work. How can this be fixed? Thanks for your help…

    Sorry… do the files now have to be moved to the new URL, or is there a back way to get this resolved? I’m never touching the settings again. ??

    If your host is any good, they’ll be able to point the new domain at your site in addition to the old one.

    Once that is done, the way I would proceed would be:

    1. Take a database backup (I would usually test this on a local install before the next step, so that I know it can be restored).

    2. Follow the instructions for the Interconnect/IT search & replace tool here: https://interconnectit.com/124/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/ This is designed to update all instances of the old domain in your database to the new domain.

    3. Resave your permalinks
