• …… can no longer access my dashboard …….. sigh!

I had accessed my dashboard for a couple of days, but could only view in preview, when I tried my website it would show a white page. So, I explained this yesterday on the next forum, for running but problems – or whatever? So, the moderator helped me somewhat, In that the recommendation was to re-upload the WP 3.2.1 minus the wp-content folder. Which I did and in doing so, re-visited my database user to upload a better user name. One that did not conflict with my database name. I hope I’m explaining this well?

Then I did that, uploaded it through FTP minus that folder but I also uploaded a new wp-config.php file one that reflected the new user. The old user I carefully deleted in mySQL database ……… another brainless act! I have since re-stablished that user with the permissions – ALL. But now I’m still locked out from my dashboard? Plus I had uploaded that other config file with the new user in the code.

I noticed another person on the forum that had done something similar, but this problem is not exactly the same. I’m not a programmer so I was following some instructions that told me to upload an earlier version, 2.6.3 , when I came to entering my password to access dashboard. The system told me that the latest version was already being used. As when I opened dashboard it told me that was the version I was using. However at that time I could at use the dashboard; now I get the cannot access message, from WP while using the bookmarked page for my dashboard.

  • All your database configurations (i.e. the user, database name, and password) are handled in the wp-config file. I would suggest re-visiting that file and verifying that all the correct credentials are in place. Also, I’d make sure that the user is assigned to the database correctly.

    Hi Tim S,
The file seems to be reflecting the correct user and related; this config file, is the file now lodged on the server of my website. and I seem to have the correct password all in between quotes. An issue, for me is that my user name is the same name as my database. So is this a conflict, for the system? It is different from the original database name used to create my dashboard. So do I need another URL for access? Or do I need to add back the original user info? By adding back that user and the config file to reflect the original user? ……. Looking back at what’s written here, it seems muddy and unclear, maybe? …….. Cheers! ….. honestly, I wish I was not so ignorant!

I’ve never had a problem with the database name and the database username conflicting if they are the same. I’ve done it a few times like that simply for ease in remembering them. What happens when you use the old database credentials? Does it connect?

I re-examined that file for the 20th time and saw that my database name after ‘, Was entered on the next line. So, I placed the cursor after that ‘ . Which bought the whole database line back onto one line? I saved and uploaded, but to no avail? I really thought I had it then?

So, perhaps I will create another user and config file to match? The old data base credentials are no longer in my Mysql memory, I stupidly erased the original and created a new user but the same name. I took a couple of days off of the problem, since it was giving me the heebie jeebies. Thanks for the help! I know it says, 5min, quick install and I thought I could follow instruction? But this is now hour 50 or so, spread out over the last three weeks ….. yikes!

Well, after another upload of Wp and the new user and config file, I’m distraught. This time I uploaded the complete file with the WP-content folder in it and still getting my error message. I have been in there. I know my dashboard exists! Why oh why, did i mess around with my user info. I’m going to seek hostgator help, maybe I can get that info back?

I wish I could just get it running!!! I’m not stupid, but I’m beginning to feel like a total dolt and what’s more? A frustrated dolt!

When you try to go on your website what error do you get does it connect to database if yes then you can reset your dashboard user name password from your database phpmyadmin.

When looking at my list of databases on hostgator, there is my database file but there is also a file of a database called, information_schema It is the first database name in the list, I just do not remember creating it? Is it okay to ignore it? Since I only have one site, why is it showing me 2 databases, any ideas please?
Also when I get to that place in phpmyadmin the password showing is not the one i entered in either my user info, or the config file. So, given that it does not seem as though I’m firing on all cylinders? My assumption is; that I do not click the box at the beginning of line? I just click edit take out that longstring of numbers and letters and replace with my password entered into that config file? I will not edit anything, until I see a reply to this post. Thanks and cheers!

Ignore information_schema is created by default do not worry about it.

The password you see in wp_user is encrypted that is why you do not see what you entered you need to follow instructions in my post above to change the password.

I am becoming more clear with what needs doing, from your link. I will actually do it tomorrow, after some rest and to also follow along with the steps prior to changing anything. Thank-you for clearing up some of my questions, around the encryption. …. cheers!
