    Hello,

    I’ve been reading about MultiSite and BuddyPress since about 10 hours ago, I still don’t quite understand which is better for me. I am going to do a fresh install for the site either way.

    I want my first site to have a static front page, content, and the ability to have several blogs as sub-directories (or just some sort of unique URL).

    I know using Multisite I need to install to root and choose either sub-domains or sub-directories, so can I still host other domains using MultiSite too?

    Or can I host other domains in their own directories and be able to use subdomains?

    Any clarity would be a massive help!

    Multisite = Multiple, separate, sites with their own blog, running off one database and set of files.

    BuddyPress = A social plugin.

    Yes. You can map domains to either a subfolder or subdomain install.

    Obviously you are answering a lot of questions! but my 2nd question was a follow on question, so;

    Assuming I choose to map subfolders for my first domain, can I also administer other domains with the same install of wordpress?

    i.e. https://www.example.com/blog, https://www.example.com/info, and https://www.differentexample.com, and https://www.totally.differentexample.com ?

    Reading more I don’t think its possible but any confirmation appreciated.

    The question was unclear, so you got the short answer ??

    You don’t map subfolders. You map DOMAINS.

    Example. You install Multisite as a subfolder install, so your URLs are:

    https://domain.com
    https://domain.com/site2
    https://domain.com/site3

    Now you want seconddomain.com to point to site2, so you map that via a plugin.

    That’s ALL domain mapping is ??

    Mapping a SUB domain to a subfolder install is also possible. That’s how I can have tumblr.whatever.com point to whatever.tumblr.com ?? It’s just a function of knowing how to properly assign DNS values for subdomains.

    Yeah I reworded the question a few times, but still didnt get my point across!

    Cool, sorry, wrong use of the term ‘mapping’ on my behalf too.

    Ok, sounds like I can do everything I want once I get the hang of it and I assume seconddomain –> site2 is also masked by the/a plugin so it looks like an entirely seperate site.

    I have just got MultiSite working and one of the first eBooks I spotted is MultiSite centric so may well be purchasing that shortly!!
