I often have one tab open to my site and another to the dashboard. When I add or modify a page and want to look at it, I’ll click on the site tab from the tab bar in the browser and when I go back to the dashboard (a different tab) and try to do something, I’ll get a login dialogue box explained that my session has expired. Maybe the default session timeout is around 30 seconds of inactivity. In which case, how do I change that? Or is there something else entirely going on and what do I do to fix it?

    Thanks,
    Rob

It could be a plugin or theme doing it. Try:
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Seventeen, etc.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Alternately, if you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

It turns out that just switching from Safari to Firefox resolved the issue.
