I’ve got so far with this and now I’m stumped. I could do with a little help, if possible.

I’ve set up Desktop Server and I’ve used Duplicator to create a local copy of my website. I have the installer file and the archive, and the ’empty’ site available. I’ve studied YouTube guides and read up on this but I can’t make head or tail of it. Everything seems geared towards setting up a site online, or at your hosting account. All I want is a simple duplicated site, sited locally, and even if it only has a few pages that I can test things on.

I keep coming up against setting up databases and other stuff that may or may not be vital (I’m not tech-savvy enough to judge), but I just want to know is there a simple way to set the site up. Like I said, it only needs to have a few pages, not the entire site.

It’s just struck me now that I could just copy a few pages (via FileZilla, I suppose, assuming I can work out how to do that – still a bit shaky on using it). Or just copy a few pages by simple copy-and-paste. I suppose that would work too, and be a lot easier.

Am I on the right track, do you think? My site has over 200 pages, but as long as I could just duplicate a few pages and run the same theme I could test a few things, and that’s all I need. So maybe the simple copy-and-paste method would suit me best.

Could someone please advise am I on the right track, or am I kidding myself that this would work?

    Thanks, any help much appreciated.

  • Hey Kayten,

Which videos have you checked out? I can probably point you to some other ones… Also did you check out the Quick Start Guide? It can be a bit overwhelming if you haven’t ever done this before. Do you happen to have a technical friend who can help?

    Cheers~

    Hey Cory, thanks for responding.

I watched your ‘official’ guide video and several others on YouTube by people who use Duplicator. Came to the conclusion that the database stuff was beyond me, so I wanted to know if I could just copy-and-paste a few pages into the ’empty’ site I created with Desktop Server. I’ve since realised I’d obviously have to install the same theme and all the same plugins, but that would present me, as far as I can tell, with the same environment as the original site (but with only a handful of pages, which would be fine).

Would this obviate the necessity for all the database stuff?

My needs with Duplicator are very limited; I just need a few pages so I can try out various different configurations, such as widening the site, changing some CSS styles, etc.

And no, I don’t have a tame IT person handy ?? It would save me a lot of trouble, but I’m flying solo.

    Thanks!

    Hey Kayten,

I don’t see any reason why not, if you just want to simulate the changes in a local development area you could just cut and paste your changes to see how things will look at feel. You may have to do some other adjustments such as theme and plugin setup to mimic your live site, but that is a reasonable way to go if you don’t want to mess with a transfer…

    Cheers~

Thanks Cory, that’s put my mind at rest. Obviously, with not being too tech-savvy, I’m always a bit nervous about doing something that could potentially cause a problem.

So, I’ve just run Desktop Server and opened my dev site … I don’t need to mess with the archive and the installer at all now, right? I can just get on with a bit of cut-and-paste and installing the theme and plugins?

And thank you for taking the time to respond and advise, I thought nobody was going to reply. Much appreciated, my friend.

    No Problem. Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V away ??

Sorry to bother you again Cory, just a quick question:

I’ve copied-and-pasted several pages (after installing the theme and all the plugins), and I’m about to start making a few changes.

But when I click on Appearance, there’s no sign of ‘Edit CSS’.

How do I get that to show up?

And thanks, I do appreciate your help.

By the way, in case it’s relevant I’m using a child theme of Tiny Framework.

I’m not sure to be honest, I would contact the Theme author they will be able to guide you through the process, just in-case they don’t even offer the ‘Edit CSS’ option in their theme…

Thanks Cory, I’ll see if I can find out. But it’s in the original theme so it’s not like it doesn’t exist, it’s just not showing up at the moment.

It’s okay, I can make changes using the Custom CSS Manager plugin. I had that activated on the original site but I remember doing a lot of small changes using Edit CSS. They both produce the same result so all’s well!

Sounds good! Going to close out thread…

    Cheers~
