• I’m a first-time blogger, and I’m completely confused on my current problem…

I have no navigation menu on my blog, yet I have one post. How can I add a ‘Blog’ page? When I try to go to WPADMIN > PAGES > Add Page it asks me to enter data, but I just want to place the posts underneath it. Does that make sense?

Any help would be greatly appreciated : )

  • Hi alaskatoargentina,

The default setting in WordPress is to display a list of your recent posts on the Front page of your site. The reader then clicks on the title of a post to read the full post (single.php).

If you want to change your site to display a static page as the Front page instead and show your recent blog posts on a separate page, you can by following these steps:

    1. Create two pages under Pages (one for your static Front Page and the other for your blog posts).
    2. Leave the page for your blog posts blank, and add whatever content you want for your static page.
    3. Go to Settings > Reading and change “Front page displays” to “A static page”
    4. Choose your new static page from the “Front page” drop down and your new blank posts page from the “Posts page” dropdown

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the fast response!

If I create two pages, one static one blog, how can I add posts to the blog? That’s what I’m confused about… : (

    Graham

    Hello again Graham,

You’re welcome. I apologize for the confusion. WordPress will automatically add your posts to the blog page for you. All you have to do is tell it to show a static page for your Front Page and then choose what page you want your posts shown on. Then, as you add posts, those posts will be automatically added to the page you told WordPress to use as your “Posts page.”

    Hope this helps!

    Hello Christi,

Thanks for the fast response again. I’m completely confused here…

WordPress will automatically add posts to a page titled Blog? The WPADMIN > PAGES section is blank, I have no pages. So if I create a page titled ‘Blog’ WordPress will auto detect the title and put posts into it, regardless of the template type?

    Hello again Graham,

Let’s start over to hopefully cut down on the confusion. The default settings when you first install WordPress is that the Front page of your WordPress site will display blog posts. Your Front Page is what people see when they go to alaskatoargentina.net. Just create posts and they should appear on your home page (unless you have a theme that does something different).

Perhaps the best way to see this in action is to change to the default theme, add some test posts and then view your site.

Now, if you instead would like to show a static page for your Front Page and have your posts on a separate page, that’s when you create the two pages (one for the static page, one for the posts). After you create the two pages, change the settings in your dashboard (Settings > Reading).

With all of this being said, it’s altogether possible your theme has some different behavior if you aren’t seeing the normal WordPress behavior. If that’s the case, you’ll want to check with your theme developer’s documentation as the Modest theme you care using is a paid theme.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks a ton for the fast response. It’s very clear now! : )

I deleted the standard pages that came by default, down to zero pages. I created a blog post but didn’t have any pages, so I was confused about where they were appearing…

So just one more quick question – If I want to have three pages:

    1. Blog
    2. About
    3. Contact

The blog page has a text body to insert information in. This is different than writing posts, so how do I get the posts I write to appear underneath Blog? Why does the Blog page ask for written information if it just houses individual posts? Very confusing…

    Hello again Graham,

Just so I make sure I understand what you want to do, do you want a static front page for your site or do you want your recent posts to appear on your site’s front page? What do you have for your Reading settings? You shouldn’t need to input any content on the Blog page. Yes, I know there is a box there so you can, but when you want to display posts on a page you have created, you don’t want to enter any content on the page in the editor.

    Hope this helps!

How do I have posts appear on a page?

    Hello alaskatoargentina,

Do you want a static front page or do you want the front page to show your latest posts?

    Thanks!

    Hello Christi,

I inadvertently deleted all the default pages. I would like the front page to show latest posts. is there an easy way to do this?

    Graham

    Hello again Graham,

Yes, simply create your posts and make sure that in General > Reading settings in the “Front page displays” area that “Your latest posts” is selected.

    Hope this helps!

I currently have that option set, yet look at my page : alaskatoargentina.net

    Hi Graham,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I see you have posts on your home page and I see pages in your navigation. It looks like you were able to get this working correctly. If not, please let me know.

    Thanks!
