• My websites were created after 3.4.2 was released. I have never had to update WP on my sites. The first problem I noticed is that under plugins I have no add new option. I have to add all plugins via my cPanel manually. I can get it done but the add new would be so nice. I added the WP policies plugin but cannot get into settings because I do not have the necessary permissions. As I was searching through the forum for a possible solution, I stated seeing posts that users had lost the admin toolbar after updating to 3.4.2. I saw some very complicated (for me) fixes that seemed to work for some users but I don’t have to knowledge to attempt changing php code. I then found a plugin to download the admin toolbar for versions up to 3.4.2. I successfully downloaded and extracted it but can’t see anything different on WP. Selecting admin on the Howdy dropdown just takes me to my profile page. Is the admin toolbar the same as the user toolbar but with more options or one that’s completely separate. I am the only user for my websites and am the administrator yet I don’t seem to have permissions to do some things. Can anyone help this newbie?

  • Are you able to upload it to your site through the add media menu and give a link, or simply place the file on your sevrer, and again provide a link. If it’s able to be seen publicly, more people have the opportunity to help

I added a post titled Dashboard to https://www.ideas-from-toni.biz/homedecor/

    k, a few things:

    1. were you able to disable all your plugins? there still seems to be quite a few active.
    2. can you list the plugins currently downloaded? (inactive or not)
    3. can you confirm the user list has you titled “administrator”
    4. are you able to get to your theme file code if necessary?

If you ARE indeed administrator, I wonder if one of the plugins and/or theme defaults has restricted admin rights in any way.

I deactivated all plugins by renaming the plugin folder in cPanel. I changed the theme to 2011. I then went back a reactivated the plugins is use. I will put a screenshot of the plugin list on a page titled Plugins. Yes I am the administrator, I don’t know what the theme file code is or where to find is. If it is in theme settings, I cannot get to that page. Would it help if I gave you access to my dashboard?

the theme file code would be in appearance > editor, but most people just get to it via ftp. same way you would upload an html or image doc to your server.

if you are comfortable making an admin account for me i would be happy to take a look

i registered but it won’t let me log in. you’ll have to change my user level to admin before i can probably

esmi, can you help me with my problem?

Do I need to change permissions in cPanel. Each theme’s permissions are set at 0755. Could this be limiting my access to some screens?

No. And if this is a multisite, then I’d suggest that you try posting in the Multisite forum. In the meantime, try:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

He can’t edit plugins, that’s part of the problem.

I am not comfortable posting my email address on a public forum (and please don’t post passwords). But i registered for your site, so you should have my email details in the user list. Go to users and find my profile, then you will have all my details and can edit my user level.

    He can’t edit plugin

Then he can reset the plugins folder.

esmi, I am a very new newbie. Please bear with me. I already deactivated all plugins and switched to 2011 theme. Does the theme switch have to be done for each page and post on my site? Because I have the 2011 them on the first page and eDegree on the next page. After I deactivated all plugins and reset the theme, there was no change in what I can do. I still am not allowed into the settings of themes, I don’t have an adm bar if it is different from the one I posted, and I still do not have the “add new plugin” option. That’s the only way I know of that I can tell if there is a change. How do I reset the plugins folder? To deactivate, I renamed the folder then corrected it back to plugins. If I need to redo any of this, I will. If I have to use your last suggestion of re-uploading, I have some questions about that.

tcideas0, you can’t simply change the plugin folder name to deactivate them. That will cause your plugins to be “missing” and if wordpress can’t find /plugins/index.php it will confuse the admin panel. You need to be able to actually deactivate the plugins to get the plugin data disengaged. Also, ALL your themes need to be set to the default (2011) to see if it’s a theme conflict.

I am not in any way soliciting credentials, esmi. He asked if I could look at it and I said if he is comfortable with that I am willing to help. I do this for a living and would never ask someone to turn their servers over to me, nor would I allow anyone to ever post login credentials or any other sort of contact info on a public forum.

I am still willing to try and help without being able to see code, but if he really doesn’t understand how to get to theme files or deactivate things manually, he’ll probably need someone to look on his behalf.
