• Hello! I am a complete and utter newbie. In fact I didn’t even set up the blog myself – a friend (now unavailable!) set it up for me.

This morning I thought I’d see if I could change the web address of the site by just typing a new address into the URL boxes in the “settings” section. Now the original site has lost all formatting and when I try to log in it tries to redirect me to the new URL and so I just get the message “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage”.

I have read a lot of threads on this forum about how to fix this, but the “changing the site URL” link that people post doesn’t help me because I can’t log in!

People have also mentioned something about phpMyAdmin, but I don’t know what that is. I tried typing that in at the end of the web address in the address bar, but that didn’t seem to help. You see what a newbie I am!

The original address was https://www.mrandmrsstjohn.com and the address I tried to change it to was https://www.mrandmrsstjohndiscussionblog.com.

I’d be so grateful for any assistance.

    Frances

  • See Changing The Site URL ? WordPress Codex for recovery instructions. You don’t need to use phpmyadmin, but you do need to use FTP to add settings to wp-config.php to rest the URLs. You need to set up and use FTP. See Filezilla and FTP Clients ? WordPress Codex.

Looks like you are on amazonaws.com, so you will probably have to use FTP, as amazon doesn’t have a traditional Cpanel.

    Hi songdogtech

Thanks a lot for responding to me so quickly.

I have read through the link you posted and found the bit about FTP, but I don’t actually know what FTP is.

    The link says this:

“1. FTP to the site, and get a copy of the active theme’s functions.php file. You’re going to edit it in a simple text editor (like notepad) and upload it back to the site.”

I understand the bit about editing it in notepad and inserting the extra bits of text, but I don’t know how to do the first step, which is “FTP to the site”. Do you think you could give me a tip on how to do that, please?

    Thank-you!

I apologise. I have just read through the second link you sent me. I will try to fix this myself and get in touch if I can’t work it out.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello again

Thanks for your reply, but I am having some difficulty working through the solutions. I tried to get to the ftp site (by typing ftp://mrandmrsstjohn.com into the address box), but it is asking me for a user name and password.

Am I using the wrong process to get to FTP, or do I actually need a user name and password of some description? The friend who set up the blog for me would have those details, I imagine, but he is no longer contactable.

All I want is to have the blog deleted! Is there any easy way to do this? Or is it perhaps possible to ask WordPress to delete it for me?

I’d be very appreciative of any advice.

    Thanks.

    Frances
