• My question is about the pages listed in the menu under https://tomlines.org.gridhosted.co.uk/category/other-papers/.

I cannot write anything on these pages, although I could last week. If I go to a page’s edit function on the dashboard, I find myself in a section called “Visual.” But I don’t want anything visual on these pages – just text and links to pdf files uploaded in the Media Library. However, when I click on “Text” nothing happens.

Likewise, when I click on the “Insert into page” button in the Media Library to insert a file’s link on a page, nothing happens. But last week I got both of these commands to work, as you should be able to see at https://tomlines.org.gridhosted.co.uk/banking-and-finance/.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi @yapjfq,

I just answered this exact same question HERE, please do not make anymore topics.

There is a huge difference between archives, posts and pages.
    Read HERE for more information.

I know the difference between archives, posts and pages. Please don‘t talk down to me. But I am facing a maddening problem with my website – something that I could do last week but cannot do now. And I have not managed to find anyone who is willing and able to give me any useful advice for it.

What I describe in this topic is related to the other one I set up, but not the same. That is why I created it too. After creating the other topic, it occurred to me that the basic problem may that I cannot write text on these pages, not that I cannot insert pdf’s in them. That is why I created this as a separate topic. I am an ordinary member of the public, not a technician, and I do not know which of those two aspects of the problem is the underlying one.

Can you start by telling us what’s changed since last week? added a plugin? removed one?
your understanding of the “visual” might not be entirely clear.
visual or text are basically the same thing wherein you write your content with one difference. visual is for the WYSIWYG editor, meaning you can add formatting to your content…

Now if you can’t add anything, whether in visual or text, is another story
Are you the admin and have access to modify pages? are you the sole user (to rule out someone changing user roles)

    help us help you

PS: you weren’t talked down to, it didn’t look like so. But these forums have, more often than not, the answers to most questions. A search is your starting point and if that doesn’t help, a clear concise explanation of what’s going on, with as many details as possible, is required.

Thanks for your reply, and sorry I was a little impatient with @helldog2018 earlier. I have had problem after problem after problem with setting up this website, it‘s taking far longer than I could ever have imagined and it’s beginning to wear me down. But I should not have taken it out on someone else.

I am the admin and sole user of the website.

Since you asked about installations, last week I installed the Wordfence plugin. However, to illustrate the problems I’ve had, after a couple of days all reference to it on the dashboard disappeared when there was an update, although it was still visible inside the program. Earlier this week I removed it from there and uploaded it afresh.

I also uploaded the UpDraftPlus backup plugin a few days ago. However, it did not complete the backups successfully. That was repaired by my hosting company – but I have just seen that it was unsuccessful again on its daily runthrough a couple of hours ago, so I will have to ask them to try again!

Any advice you can give about writing on the pages or inserting pdf’s on them will be very welcome. I am grateful for your offer to provide it.
