• I downloaded wordpress. I’m on a Windows platform and my server is AOL. In the instructions it says to “Open up wp-config-sample.php with a text editor like WordPad or similar and fill in your database connection details.” I can open this fine, I just have no idea where the get the information requested. I don’t understand the language nor do I know where to the look for the answers.

    Thanks for your help!

    Pamela

I can see I have to back up even further. Explain the database and username please…Some of us need to start from the beginning.

I don’t really know what do you mean by “my server is AOL” but I assume they are your hosting service where your domain (subdomain?) is going to be. I also assume before you downloaded WP you read the requirements by clicking the About button on the top of this page. What is mentioned there – MySQL – is the database. If you have a host company that does not offer MySQL database in your hosting account, you won’t be able to run WordPress.

The database is where all your posts and WordPress options will be stored. For WP to connect to your database it needs to know 4 pieces of information.

The short story being if you don’t know the required values then you need to email your host. Tell them you’re going to install WordPress and ask what are the values for:
    your database host
    your database username
    your database password
    your database name

Once you have those values you can edit the file. Without them you can’t get any further.
