• I’m having problems getting a clone made of a new web site so I can edit it without going live. The theme I’m using is Vamtam Lawyers-Attorneys. The problem is that there is another version of the web site on the current web address, and it’s preventing me from modifying the new theme on Dashboard. https://parse-network.com. I am trying to put the new theme somewhere else on the same server (I have created a dev subdirectory).

    You can install second instance of WP in a separate directory with its own separate independent database and use it as a test site just for testing purposes.

    This is what I have for last many years and it works great.

    In your case, you can install this test WP in like this:
    https://parse-network.com/wp-test/

    Tara:

    Would I have to do a clean install of WordPress to make this work?

    If you want to create a second (i.e., test site), then yes you need install this second instance (with its own separate database) in a separate location as i suggested above. This where you can then test all your modifications and before applying those modifications to your main site.

    I know this sounds dumb, but how do I install wordpress into the second test site?

    This is a clean WordPress install:

    * Upload WordPress files to your dev sub directory.

    * Create new database.

    * Edit wp-config.

    * Goto Yoursite.com/dev/wp-admin/install.php

    If you want to create a duplicated independent copy of your current blog. Different instructions need to be followed!
