I am really lost

When it comes to computer stuff I dont know alot. When I downloaded wordpress it was a zipped file. When I tried to open it up and pick a theme I got a zipped file that just opened up to a bunch of other files instead of a theme to start blogging on. Can someone help me? I am really lost here.
