• I am getting more and more confused.
I have followed the instruction in “Getting Started / Registering Cookies and how to find them”.
So on my computer in the Chrome browser, when I look at the cookies for my website, I see 4 cookies listed. When I press the “Secure” statement in the URL bar of Chrome, it tells me there are 5 cookies for my website. (Not a big deal, it’s a simple website)
When I inspect in the Brave browser and follow the same instructions, I see only 2 cookies. Safari shows 5, Firefox also 5.
So different number of cookies for different browsers.
How about cookies on mobile devices? Are there different/more cookies? Where can I see these?
I guess I have to go for the max.

    Couple of questions:
    1. how can I be sure that I have found all cookies, i.e. my visitor does not see other cookies on my site outside the ones that I have encountered?
    2. how do I discover the source of the cookie? Most cookies I can trace back, but not all.
    3. how do I know the function / classification of the plugin? I guess the source / developer should be able to tell me
    4. How do I know how to disable, opt-out or react properly on a disagreement for using a plugin? Also through the developer?
    5. How do I know how to configure this proper response in your plugin?
    6. How to include the cookie in your plugin while I have not yet received a response from the developer? Pending this info from all developers, the privacy preferences look pretty silly.

Perhaps I am the only one who is pretty much completely in the dark…
Your help in me understanding all of this is highly appreciated.

  • You are not alone, have no fear!!

What I did to locate the cookies and their sources was to sign up for a trial period with a premium GRPD plugin (also found on WP) As part of the trial period, they will run a scan on your site and after a short period they will alert you to the fact that the download is ready

The cookies are listed by category, name and source, together with a description of what it does.

    So handy!!

Still struggling, but almost there (?)

    1. how can I be sure that I have found all cookies, i.e. my visitor does not see other cookies on my site outside the ones that I have encountered?
The best you can do is to use all functionality of your site and see what cookies were set.

    2. how do I discover the source of the cookie? Most cookies I can trace back, but not all.
Most of the time you can google the cookie name and it will give you a hint of what the cookie is for and who is setting it

    3. how do I know the function / classification of the plugin? I guess the source / developer should be able to tell me
You can classify them as you want. Some are easy to classify, other require some imagination. _ga for example could be under Analytics, while some preferece cookie like the WP comments cookies could be under Preferences and so on.

    4. How do I know how to disable, opt-out or react properly on a disagreement for using a plugin? Also through the developer?
I’m not sure I fully understand this one. Are you talking about another plugin setting a cookie and how to handle that? If so, this plugin developer should give you the tools to do so. If not and this functionality is essential for your site to function, you can add those cookies to the Necessary category and mark them as Required

    5. How do I know how to configure this proper response in your plugin?
    Not sure what you mean.

    6. How to include the cookie in your plugin while I have not yet received a response from the developer? Pending this info from all developers, the privacy preferences look pretty silly.
I would wait for them or try to figure it out. Maybe my answer to number 4 is helpful for this one too.
