I have created a website that includes list of policies on a page, with each leading to a hyperlink for that policy. For some reason when I select one of several in a row, the selection box is approximately four lines too high and often selects the wrong link, as opposed to the one my cursor is straight over.

For example, if I have a list of four policies that are hyperlinked:

    Research & Intellectual Property

    Software – Distribution

    Software – Single User

    University Sponsored Educational Materials

And I select the bottom one, the small dotted line selection box that comes up is big enough to cover all four selections and often doesn’t select the correct one. It’s like the selection field is too big but why is this happening, and how do I fix it?

    Any help is certainly appreciated.

  • Please put your site address so there is something to test with.

This is because your links are overlapping and need to be inline so that they are separate from each other.

@stefsternyc and @joyously – What do you mean inline? How do I make them that way?

You are using a commercial theme (even if you are using the free version… I can’t tell) so I’d suggest you contact their support system.

I think what you are seeing, and thinking is a menu button, is actually some text that is presented when you mouse over a button. Since that text ‘hovers’ over another button it might seem you are clicking on a button but getting a different menu item’s link.

There’s probably some documentation at the theme’s support area to help you understand that ‘feature’ and adjust it or else disable it.

It isn’t a menu button. It is text that is linked. When I select the link, the selection area is just too large.

If you click the link and just hold down instead of releasing, you can see the size of the “selection field.”

I’ve never seen that before, and I didn’t see it until you explained just now. It’s as if a script is changing something in the CSS because it’s not showing in the Developer Tools as being any different. I thought it might be the link was the list size, but it’s not consistent.

I’m thinking it’s the script that affects the menu, because only the menu links are not doing it. Even the social links at the bottom have the tall outline.

@joyously Any ideas how to fix it?

No, I couldn’t even see what was causing it. But since you only see it when you hold the mouse button on the link, it’s not that bad.

@joyously thanks for trying! Unfortunately, it IS bad because when you actually go to click the links they often select the wrong one and I can only assume it’s because of that oversized selection box!

I don’t see that problem. I just see a floating text box over a different link in my Chrome browser. If I click the text box I’m actually clicking the underlying link. I guess I could go in the other room and look at it via Firefox to see what you are seeing but I’m being lazy this weekend.

Why not go to a default theme like Twenty Seventeen to see if the problem still persists then if it goes away you’ll know it’s theme dependent and you can ask the theme author’s support for help.
