    Hi,

Please note the website isn’t live yet and is in maintenance mode.

I’m not able to activate Gzip compression for HTML. I’ve tried copying and pasting the code to .htaccess next to the existing Hummingbird code. I can’t see any files called vhosts.conf or httpd.conf on the server.

Any ideas what could be wrong and how I would resolve this issue?

    Thanks.

    Hi @marktea1,

Please do note that the website needs to be public to ensure Hummingbird could pick the Gzip Compression is working or not.

What Hummingbird does is add the rules regarding Gzip inside the .htaccess file located in your root directory. If the server doesn’t support this action Hummingbird won’t be able to make any changes.

The root directory would be where your WordPress core files and folder resides, ie /wp-content, /wp-admin and /wp-includes folder.

If the rules are already present inside the .htaccess file and still not working. Then it’s something you’ll have to check with your hosting provider.

You might find the following helpful, you only need to ensure the rules mentioned in the given article are present inside the server side, ie for httpd.conf file:
    https://knackforge.com/blog/karalmax/how-enable-gzip-compression-apache

You can skip the step mentioned about adding in vhosts because the plugin should be automatically adding the rule inside the .htaccess file.

Please do check and let us know if you have any further query. Have a nice day ahead.

    Best Regards,
    Nithin
