Huge delay opening homepage

  • After all my hard work learning how to use WordPress, finding and buying a good theme and plugins and putting the website together… After all that now I have a website that takes 20 seconds or more to open. Wish I knew that before I wasted all that time and money. This is a major fail for WP unless I can fix this huge stall problem. I’ve tried the suggested plugins to speed things up and I don’t have all that many pages. Once the home page loads everything works fine.
    What else can be done? Plugins don’t work, reducing the number of pages and media is counterproductive- the site needs to grow not shrink.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll do those steps and report back if I find an offending plugin or if it’s the theme itself.

    I did nothing and now it’s loading in about 3 seconds so what the heck is going on here?

    @greg, your second visit is not loading all resources, instead it loads from the cache of your browser..

    Thanks for the link- will go test it now, but that second visit was after closing the browser and clearing the cache several times so it should’ve been the same long delay. I doubt it’s network traffic related, though I never can tell, but speed tests this morning were as fast as my connection gets (about 2mb/sec).
