I have tried disabling plugins, changing theme, removing plugins. I also have tried on a completely clean install with a default theme and I get the same result.
My web host has suggested I contact wordpress.
The server is litespeed and it is using 5.4 php
As far as I can see all the correct settings are there for memory and module installs.
What else can I do ?

The problem is intermittent, every second or third image appears to upload but I mostly can’t view the attachment page or get white screen on ‘edit’
I have wasted so much time on this, can anyone advise?
    thanks!

    – pretty confusing. Can you elaborate/clarify?
    – have lately checked server error logs for for more detailed information as to what has failed?
    – how are you uploading images?

Have you tried increasing memory available for php.

I am using wordpress default media upload library
the http error appears with most uploads, often very small images.
Sometimes after the http error the thumbnail will appear in the library.
However, the edit thumbnail button takes me to a white screen and the front end attachment page is often empty ( when i view source the image size is 1px x 1px)
On a clean install in a sub directory I get the following error.

[25-Apr-2015 16:50:45 UTC] PHP Warning: Illegal string offset ‘width’ in /home/myhome/public_html/devclean2/wp-content/themes/twentyfifteen/inc/template-tags.php on line 115

    thanks!

    – Upload a fresh, unedited copy of the Twenty Fifteen Theme. Delete the old files first. see if that helps.

    Hi Tara
That seems to have helped a bit with the clean install. I can’t seem to upload more than one image at time though.

I have now re-uploaded all wordpress core to my live site. There is a slight improvement. Maybe I need to find a recent copy and re-upload all of my old plugins too.

attachment on live site is now…

The web host has reported this which means very little to me, can anyone see anything in this?

    503 Service Unavailable

    – Review this: https://www.checkupdown.com/status/E503.html
    – contact your webhost. It is likely a server issue despite what your host says
    – also, check your .htaccess file
    – check IP restrictions

    Hi Tara
Thank you for the link and advice. The webhost has increased the php limit. I have been able to upload some images but I get a white screen when I try to edit the image or if I go to https://www.mydomain.co.uk/wp-admin/upload.php directly after upload.
the http error for now seems to have gone but something very odd is going on.

    – looks like the increase in memory by the webhost is not sufficient.

    – one of your plugins may be a memory hog. Deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the memory hog plugin(s).

    – A theme could also be a memory hog. try switching to the unedited default Twenty Fifteen theme for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue.

    Hi Tara
A clean install on the same server space is getting the same issue.
    thanks for your help…

    It sounds like server problem
