Hello. If I activate your plugin, my site reports an HTTP 503 Service Unavailable Error. Will this be detrimental to my page ranking if a search engine crawls my site and sees this error? If so, is there a way to resolve that?

Maybe I edit the “Robots Meta Tag” field in Settings–>WP Maintenance Mode–>General? Mine is currently at ‘noindex, nofollow.’

    Thanks.

  • Hello @cag8f,

If you see an HTTP 503 Service Unavailable Error page instead of the maintenance mode page, I recommend asking your hosting provider support to disable their default 503 error page.

Also, I think you should read this great article posted by Yoast: https://yoast.com/http-503-site-maintenance-seo/

503 Service unavailable. This is the one you want to be returning to Google when you’re dealing with site maintenance. It tells Google that you are in fact working on this page or that something else went wrong. Google knows that when this status code is returned, to check the page again later on. This is what we’ll be discussing a bit more.

    Thanks,
    George

OK thanks for that article. In light of that, I think it would be beneficial for the 503 error to remain in-place. Let’s consider this resolved for now, thanks.
