• Hi

I (stupidly) made a few changes on the parent functions file for my child theme and the website has crashed. I was remotely accessing the dashboard but I can’t seem to access anything now at all even the login. I haven’t touched anything via FTP.

This is the message I keep getting:
HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request. This is the site https://www.citizensuk.org

I don’t know how to repair this at all and I can’t access the functions file to restore it to normal.

    Please help me!

    Thanks

  • You should be able to get in via FTP — and deactivate the theme — see:

I would log into your site via FTP and just grab the function.php and remove those changes that you made to it. I also wouldn’t change anything in the parent theme, it defeats the purpose of making a child theme. ??

I’m working remotely and I’m not sure that the server gives access to the FTP, unfortunately. But when I get a chance to work with the wordpress files directly, would it be a good idea to delete the existing Responsive child theme and reupload it again? Would that mean my child theme, would stay in place?

Thank you for your help so far!

If you have FTP access, try just changing the name of the child theme file– it should then default back to twentyeleven and you should be able to login. Then deal with the functions file you changed before activating that theme again.

I mean delete the parent theme and upload it again to the wp-content folder?

Yes, deleting the parent theme and then re-upload would be fine.

    Best of luck.

If you have any more issues with the theme, you should go check out the forum for responsive. https://themeid.com/support/
