• I host and produce a podcast, and use WordPress for the website. A few weeks ago I was updating a few things on the site, and it just stopped working. I was using the Cardoza WordPress Poll on a new theme, and the plugin needed up be updated in order for me to add it to the page. I have no idea what happened, but it signed me off, mid-update. Now when I go to sign in on my admin page… there is no page. Instead of where I normally would sign into my website it says:

    “Server error
The website encountered an error while retrieving https://fromthezoo.com/wp-admin/. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
    Here are some suggestions:
    Reload this webpage later.
HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.”

I already went into Filezilla and deleted the plugin, tried to reinstall it, and eventually just deleted it again with no positive results. Has anyone had an issue like this before, and if so how did you fix it? Is there a way t o reinstall wordpress without losing everything already on the website? Please help!

  • Is there a .maintenance file in your WordPress directory? This file automatically goes up when there is a problem in the WP Admin. Take a look, see if that may be causing your problem. ??

For future reference, just rename the plugin folder and that will deactivate the plugin. Then, from within the WP-Admin you can delete it.

    Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.
