Yesterday I tried updating the webpage by removing old content and updating the layout/theme. I installed a new theme, the xblog pro, and activated it. Once activated, and live previewing, I found that I was unable to return to the admin wordpress editing area. Everytime I try to return to change the theme, or make any changes, even to my user profile, I get a HTTP error 500 message. I contacted the party that designed the theme xblog pro, but they asked for my username/password and I didn’t feel comfortable giving it to them. I need help to be able to regain control of the website.

The site maintenance is on, from when I was updating it, and I can’t even turn off the maintenance, so the site is completely down.

    please help!

Internal server errors (error 500) are often caused by plugin or theme function conflicts, so if you have access to your Dashboard, try deactivating all plugins. If you don’t have access to your Dashboard, try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Twenty Nineteen theme to rule-out a theme-specific issue. If you don’t have access to your Dashboard, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue.

If that does not resolve the issue, it’s possible that a .htaccess rule could be the source of the problem. To check for this, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and rename the .htaccess file. If you can’t find a .htaccess file, make sure that you have set your SFTP or FTP client to view invisible files.

If you weren’t able to resolve the issue by either resetting your plugins and theme or renaming your .htaccess file, we may be able to help, but we’ll need a more detailed error message. Internal server errors are usually described in more detail in the server error log. If you have access to your server error log, generate the error again, note the date and time, then immediately check your server error log for any errors that occurred during that specific time period. If you don’t have access to your server error log, ask your hosting provider to look for you.

To fix the issue where your site is in maintenance mode, delete the file .maintenance in your root WordPress install folder.

Thank you, I appreciate the quick responses and advice for solving the issues. First, I do not have access to the dashboard due to this error. Second, I was passed down this wordpress domain from someone else, and I have zero experience with website design/debugging/maintenance. I’ve tried to get a cpanel account, download firezille, watch youtube videos, but I’m not getting anywhere.

I will keep trying, but I’d like to get this resolved ASAP

WordPress sites are entirely self contained, so the steps mentioned above are the best we can offer until there’s more details, this isn’t something we’ll be to do for you.

You’ll need to find access to that hosting account, without it you truly don’t have any control over the site, or worse the site will be gone once the hosting account is not renewed.

Your hosting provider appears to be GoDaddy, and you can reach their support at https://www.godaddy.com/help

Thank you so much for the help. I wasn’t sure how to find the hosting provider, I thought it was godaddy but I wasn’t sure. I’ll keep trying.

Update: I found all the login information for cpanel and was able to then correct the error. It was a theme issue. Thanks so much for the help!
