HTTP 500 internal server error with wp-comments-post.php in IE

  • Hello, if I try adding a comment but either don’t fill in the necessary required fields or I enter invalid info, I get a 500 Internal Server Error page in IE rather than the error message telling the user where they went wrong. Firefox shows the correct error message

    On searching the forum I came across the following thread and tried using longer error messages but that did not work either. I’m starting to flounder a bit! Could anyone offer some assistance / advice?

    I’m getting the same error. When I try and post a comment to test it out, it comes back with an “HTTP 500 Internal Server Error” message and the “website cannot display the page” message. I’m getting the error even if I fill out the comment form completely

    If I am logged into the account and open up another browser window (IE 7) the comments work fine. But when I logged out of the system, I get teh 500 Internal Server Error.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    i’m having the same issue. I can’t get any error messages to work on my comments field. If the comments are missing, or the captcha is incorrect i get a 500 internal server error page instead of error messages.

    thanks. I was kinda leaving that as a last resort though as it is a workaround rather than a solution to the original cause of the problem. It would require the eventual editor of the site (not me) to update the file each time they need to upgrade to a newer version of WordPress.

    I really don’t understand what might be the cause though as it doesn’t seem to effect the majority.

    The problem is that Internet Explorer (prior to version 7) will not display error pages which are smaller than 512 bytes. As of this writing, WordPress 2.7 has a bug in which it does not make the error page big enough to be greater than the 512-byte threshold after gzip compression (which is often turned on for many hosting providers like DreamHost).

    The thread mentioned by eliemartin does have a solution.
