HTML Escape Characters

When I use the HTML code
→to create a right arrow character, it works fine when I add it to the caption of an image slide. However, when I add it to a layer in a layer slide (using the source editor), it gets replaced by a question mark. Is there a way of preventing the escape codes from being stripped out in a layer slide?
