• I set up username/password protect on one of my sites. I have the following info and need to do it: WordPress creates its own .htaccess file in the domains root hosting directory which you will need to make a change to in order to make our password protection feature work. If you don’t make this modification WordPress will give a 404 error when you try to access your password protected directories!

Where do I go to paste my code? Where is the root hosting directory?

  • The root hosting directtory is on your server where your host says to put your websites files. If you are using a cPanel host then the directly is usually public_html or some other hosts use the htdocs folder. You should find a .htaccess file here. Make sure you have hidden files turned on.

Mark, I don’t know how to do that and I just found out I have a web host problem. There are only 3 hosts listed by WP that are accepted by WP. Do you know of any other hosts?

I’m at a point where I may have to dump WP and go with a site builder company since I’m not a geek. This isn’t my job and I can’t take time off from work to become a geek. The web host just won’t take responsibility for that which is a hosting issue unless I pay them to manage my site and I can’t afford it. It’s time to move.

Any help or suggestions with this.

Mark, I’d like to know what the file name would be.
