.htaccess password admin directory – failure

  • I was hoping someone might be able to help me out with this…

    I’m running the latest version of WordPress on php 5.2.1. I recently migrated to a new host (DreamHost). On my old host, I had password protected the /wp-admin/ directory. This worked out well aside from the double login.

    When I went to recreate the .htaccess and .htpasswd files on my new host, I realized that they would not work.

    I set them up perfectly but whenever I would try to access the /wp-admin/ directory, I would get a “404” error. No login box.

    I think there is something in the new version of wordpress that conflicts with this… I have tested folder protection on other folders to make sure that it’s not my new host. It seems Everything in the wordpress installation is effected.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • I am having a similar problem, except I cannot locate the .htaccess file. I cannot see it in the directory, even a computer wide search results with 0.

    I am trying to resolve this issue: I am trying to give WordPress it’s own directory.

    From the Support page:

    “7. Copy the index.php and .htaccess files from the WordPress directory into the root directory of your site (Blog address).”

    Help.

    Sorry for the late posting, but perhaps this will help someone else. When moving to a new server, I ran into the same problem — the password protection that worked on the earlier server suddenly didn’t work here.

    With a lot of help, I discovered the solution. It’s due to the .htaccess in the root directory (this doesn’t happen if your blog is in a subdirectory). It’s long, so I posted it here:
