.htaccess not updating

Is your .htaccess file in the root directory of the WP installation?

Who is your host ?
Did this work and it is now broken or did it never work ?

The .htaccess file is in the root of the WP installation. Of course, if it wasn’t I should get the info message at the bottom of the Permalinks window saying “If your .htaccess was writable we could change it.”

My host is ThirdSphereHosting. This is a new installation, but I’ve done several of these without error. This is usually a cookie cutter process for me.

Actually, I’ve never done with with TSH…so I went to Manage -> Files and clicked on .htaccess there. I got an internal server error. Perhaps they don’t allow me to leave a file with permissions like 666.

The question remains though…how do I get WP to tell me what the rewrite rules should be so I can edit the file manually? I just want to know what the block of rules are so I can paste them in.

Does anyone have a suggestion on this? I got TSH to fix the 500 error, but WP will still not write changes to the file. If it would just show me what the additions to the .htaccess file are, I would just paste them in.

Did you try deleting the htaccess and then loading the Permalink options page?

If the .htaccess file is not writable, WP shows the code at the bottom of the permalinks panel in admin after clicking the update options.

I agree that it should. Setting the files permissions to 600 doesn’t even have this effect. Actually, when I do that it seems to annoy the web server itself. ??

I’ve tried deleting the file and that isn’t having the desired result either.

When the file is there, if I go to Manage -> Files, I can edit the file there. So I have confirmation that WP can write to it. But the Permalinks option won’t write to it and doesn’t give me the code, which I would normally expect if it detected it had a problem accessing the file.

P.S. I also tried deleting the entire install directory and uploading a fresh install of 1.5.2. I reattached to the database and got the same results.

I’ve found in the past that some hosts can be troublesome with regard to .htaccess files. I don’t know if this applies to ThirdSphereHosting. The host might have policies in place which prevent *nix hidden/system files (e.g. .htaccess, .htpasswd) from being world-writeable. In your case it sounds like the .htaccess file is writeable (since you can write to it from within the edit files page) but there is something bizarre going on!

If your problems continue I’d recommend getting in touch with your host, telling them what you’ve been trying to do, and maybe ask them to recreate a new, blank .htaccess file.

Just a wild thought. I have found that when I use index.php in my string the above happens. If I take index.php out then I get the “If your .htaccess was writable..” and mod_rewrite stuff.
