I received my weekly report from Wordfence and noticed my .htaccess file was modified in the last week. Where do I find details about the modification and whether it was legitimate? Does Wordfence modify this file?

  • The first step would be to actually look at the file. Can you send a copy to wftest [at] wordfence [dot] com? Add your forum username to the subject line and respond here when you do.

Also, please export your site diagnostics and attach it to the email as well.

Thanks, Tim. I’ve sent the email. I am not aware of how to export site diagnostics. Point me in the right direction and I’ll forward that to you.

    Thanks,

Sorry for missing this response, Tony.

I don’t see anything in the .htaccess file that looks janky. You have two entries that might have been changed legitimately.

There is the entry from the cPanel-generated handler for PHP. And there is the entry we add when your .user.ini is visible to the public and you choose to hide it (there would have been a scan result for this). Both are fine.

Of course, it is possible something was removed but I wouldn’t be able to see that. At this point, I think you are safe and have nothing to worry about regarding this change. You can skip the diagnostics for now. If you need to export a copy to send you can do so on the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page at the top. You should see 3 buttons there – Export, Send Report By Email, and Expand All Diagnostics. Export turns it into a text file that is easily attachable by email if you need to send us something.
