• I followed instructions “Giving WordPress its Own Directory While Leaving Your Blog in the Root Directory” I had problems with the instructions relating to the .htaccess file. I had just started setting up “pretty” permalinks. I got the instruction to update my .htacess file. I set my FTP file to display hidden files. Bit I didn’t see any .htaccess file. So, I just created one in Notepad and took the code listed, pasted it in the empty file and uploaded it. Is that all? Is anything else supposed to be there?
    Thanks,
    Ellen

  • That should do it. Just make sure that the file name actually looks like this in your ftp client:

    .htaccess

It is actually a file “type”. The “dot” must be included, and make sure you change the file permissions to 644 when you are done. If you want to let wordpress update it in the future, you should change the permissions to 666 and then update permalinks from your dashboard. Don’t forget to put the permissions back to 644 when done. Very important.
