• I am setting up multisite on a wordpress install that has content (not concerned with the content at all), I have successfully completed the first two steps of the setup but in step three it instructs me to alter or create the .htaccess file. I looked in the folder and there is none visible there, I did a search for the file and it says that the file exists on my server but when I click on the provided link it simply delivers me to the top tier of the domain I am setting up multisite on.

    Is this a common problem?

Can anyone please direct me how to correct this so I can have multisite successfully run?

    Thank you.

It’s not a problem ?? If there is none, just make one ??

I am sorry, I was not clear.

It is when I tried to create the file that it said it already was there. That is when I did a search for it on my server and sure enough, it said it was there but then when I look in the file folder, nothing named .htaccess is there.

Ah! It’s hidden. You may need to set your ftp client to show hidden files.

It is not displaying in the cpanel on my server, is there another way you would advise me to access a complete view of all the files?

Go to cpanel and in the FILES area click on webdisk, and follow the instructions
This will enable your file browser at home to see your files on server
Open up the VIEW tab on your file browser and find SHOW HIDDEN and tick that

Thank you! Got it to allow me to access the .htaccess file…now I just need to find the code I need to add to the .htaccess file to complete the task.

Hmm…got the code entered into the .htaccess and still no cigar…I mean, it creates the site but will not display the dashboard for the new site or the new site itself…not sure that makes sense.

    Any thoughts?

Does it give you a 404 for your new site? A blank page? A page with no styled content?

    Thread Starter MoveForwardMedia

    (@moveforwardmedia)

Well, it just directs me to https://dynd.search-help.net/index.php?origURL=http%3A//test.247christianradio.com/&r=http%3A//247christianradio.com/wp-admin/network/settings.php

the page it is supposed to go to is https://test.247christianradio.com

I am just really stumped as I confirmed with my host that they do in fact allow wildcard domains and also setup in my dns the *.domainname.com” so that I could publish…just stumped but that isn’t unusual! ??

Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated.

I did an install like that and things were missing, so I just started from scratch, knowing what to do much better, then it all worked fine.
Did you back up your files and db?

    Thread Starter MoveForwardMedia

    (@moveforwardmedia)

Roller, this was my reinstall. It is a new site so there was really nothing to backup since I haven’t been able to get the site to work.

I am “this close” to hiring someone to do this but I’d really like the satisfaction of figuring it out, but I am at the end of even having an idea of what to ask…so, may cost me some money.

The easiest way to test if your wildcards are right is to do this:

    https://sdasds.247christianradio.com/

Now no one has sdasds as a site, right? So that should go to the default registration page (or if you don’t have registrations on, a page that says ‘You ain’t get no registrations!’).

Yours goes to a ‘About Move Forward Media’ page right now.

I am at a loss…how do I remedy where these pages are going? Is it something I am or am not doing? Is it something regarding my hosting that I need to change? Do I just need to find another host?

I know you cannot recommend a host here in the forums and I am seriously contemplating using one of the hosting services recommended by WordPress, that way it will clear up that aspect of it anyway.

    Thanks for the feedback.

It may or may not be your host, but generally this is something fixable.

How did you setup the wildcards?

    Thread Starter MoveForwardMedia

    (@moveforwardmedia)

Ummm….well, it gave me the option to have them as *.domainname.com or domainname.com/*

    Is that what you mean?

    I selected the *.domainname.com
