    Hello all,

Our blog went down early this morning. I called our host company and they said there was a problem with our HT Access File. They said that some file or plugin (which they said they couldn’t figure out on their end) kept updating our access file with various symbols, which it shouldn’t be doing.

I’m not a tech guy but I just looked into our FTP and found the following:

    we have:

.htaccess (it reads: Filetype: HTACCESS File) (filesize – 246)

.htaccess.bak (it reads: Filetype: BAK File) (filesize – 20,336)

    and

    .htaccess.bak.2 (it reads: Filetype: 2 File) (filesize – 476)

The .htaccess.bak.2 was last modified this morning at 4:35 a.m. and I believe that it was then that our blog went down. Because the blog was working when I went to bed at 3:00 a.m. but then my friend texted me at 5:19 a.m. saying the blog was down.

Any advice or suggestions? Our host company said it would happen again unless we found out what was causing our HT Access file to be updated with symbols.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Hi Esmi. We actually figured out that the problem was the database backup plugin X-Cloner. It had written to the HT Access file several times, but in the right way…then decided to not play so nice and use invalid characters. I just read online of others having similar issues with it.

    Thanks for the suggestions!
